After a competitive pitch, we were asked to completely rebuild and redesign GKN's corporate website. We started with a detailed scoping exercise working with the board and senior management. This included a comprehensive benchmarking of 30 sites that were deemed "best practice" for content and functionality.
The next part of our task was to work out how to bring 40 subsidiary and product websites on to one common platform, with one consistent look and feel, to create ‘One GKN'. Microsoft SharePoint was chosen to ease the content management of over 600 pages - GKN were the first company in the FTSE100 to use SharePoint and we worked hard to overcome its design challenges and ensure brand consistency.
There was a lot to connect. The business had to clearly present its purpose and strategy to investors and partners, and to inspire employees and job seekers. In particular, it was vital to bring to life the scale and ingenuity of their engineering heritage and innovation, as this gave the business its competitive advantage.
The new GKN.com went live in February 2010. Unique visits are up 219%. This was Phase 1 and we are now completing Phase 2.
GKN has four divisions: Automotive, Powder Metallurgy, Aerospace and Land Systems. We are bringing all of these into line with the functionality and look and feel of the corporate site involving multiple languages.
